William James described pragmatism in 1907 as a new name for some old ways of thinking. His lecture series, “Pragmatism – A New Name for Old Ways of Thinkin'” was an attempt to address this. The lecture began by declaring a fundamental, and unsolvable tension between two different ways of thinking, the hard-minded empiricist commitment of experience and relying on facts, and the tender-minded predisposition to a priori principles that is akin to rationalization. Origins

The term pragmatic originated in the United States around 1870. One of the most important figures among the classical pragmatics was John Dewey (1859 to 1952). He is renowned for his broad-ranging contributions to various areas of philosophical inquiry such as social theory, ethics, philosophy of education, law aesthetics, and the philosophy of religion. In the latter part of his life, he came to see pragmatism as a philosophy of democracy.

Recent pragmatists developed new areas of inquiry, such as computational pragmatics (the study of computer systems which use context to better understand the motives of their users) games-theoretical and experimental pragmatics, and neuropragmatics. These areas of pragmatics help us to better understand how information and language are used.
